The 2027 Mercedes-AMG SL 43 Roadster takes an unusual approach to one of Mercedes-Benz most storied nameplates. Instead of the handcrafted V8s found in the SL 55 and SL 63, the SL 43 uses a handcrafted AMG 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 416 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. That is enough to send the four-seat roadster from 0–60 mph in an estimated 4.6 seconds, yet the smaller engine and rear-wheel-drive layout give the SL 43 a character distinct from its more powerful siblings. It is the lightest and most approachable member of the current SL family, but there is very little “entry level” about its engineering.

Its four-cylinder is one of the most technically interesting engines AMG builds. The electric exhaust-gas turbocharger draws directly from Formula 1 technology, using a 48-volt electric motor mounted on the turbocharger shaft to begin spinning the compressor before exhaust flow alone would normally provide sufficient boost. The turbocharger can reach speeds of up to 175,000 rpm, helping maintain response from low engine speeds through the upper reaches of the rev range. A belt-driven starter-generator adds further electrical assistance while supporting the car’s 48-volt architecture.

Rear-wheel drive separates the SL 43 from both V8-powered SL models. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT nine-speed transmission sends all 416 horsepower to the rear axle, preserving the traditional sports-car layout that defined earlier generations of the SL. AMG sport suspension uses independent five-arm multilink designs front and rear, while staggered 19-inch AMG wheels carry wider tires at the rear. With a curb weight of 4,012 pounds, the SL 43 is also noticeably lighter than the V8 versions.

The fabric roof is equally important to the current SL’s transformation. Mercedes-AMG replaced the previous generation’s retractable hardtop with a three-layer acoustic soft top that saves nearly 50 pounds. The Z-fold mechanism opens or closes in approximately 15 seconds and can operate at speeds up to 37 mph. Once lowered, the top folds neatly beneath the rear deck without the added weight and complexity of a separate tonneau cover.

The cabin brings the SL into the current Mercedes-Benz digital era. Third-generation MBUX combines a configurable digital instrument display with a central touchscreen and natural-language voice control, while Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC adds adaptive cruise control for longer drives. Passenger capacity is four, and the SL provides 7.5 cubic feet of cargo room. EPA fuel economy is rated at 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, giving the SL 43 a substantial efficiency advantage over the V8 versions.

Starting at $114,900, the 2027 AMG SL 43 is nearly $33,000 below the SL 55. Its appeal is not simply lower cost. Rear-wheel drive, lower weight and an extraordinarily advanced four-cylinder make it the most distinctive SL in the lineup, particularly for a driver who values responsiveness and balance as much as outright horsepower.
