The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE Coupe takes the familiar idea of a plug-in hybrid and turns it almost completely on its head. Its battery and electric motor are not primarily there to maximize electric commuting range. They are there to make an already ferocious AMG V8 faster. A handcrafted 4.0-liter biturbo V8 works with a rear-mounted 150-kW electric motor to produce 805 combined horsepower and an extraordinary 1,047 lb-ft of torque. The result is the quickest AMG GT in the lineup, with an estimated 0–60 mph time of just 2.7 seconds.

The gasoline engine is formidable before the electric motor contributes anything. The hand-built V8 produces 603 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, using twin-scroll turbochargers located within the hot V for rapid boost response. AMG adds a 201-horsepower permanently excited synchronous motor at the rear axle, integrated with its own two-speed gearbox. Because an electric motor can deliver torque essentially immediately, it fills the spaces where a combustion engine is still building revs and boost.

The electric drive unit’s location is particularly important. Mounted at the rear axle, the motor can apply its output directly where it is most useful for acceleration. Yet the system is not confined to rear-wheel propulsion. AMG Performance 4MATIC+ can transfer electric-motor torque toward the front axle as well, allowing the gasoline and electric sides of the drivetrain to work together through all four wheels. Total system output reaches 805 horsepower and 1,047 lb-ft, numbers that would have been almost unimaginable in a roadgoing Mercedes-Benz not long ago.

AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL gives the chassis the technology needed to manage that performance. Hydraulically interconnected adaptive dampers actively counter roll and pitch, while a standard front-axle lift system provides welcome assistance when approaching steep driveways or other obstacles. Active rear-axle steering contributes to maneuverability and stability, and the enormous 295-section front and 305-section rear summer tires provide the contact patch needed to deploy the hybrid powertrain.

The plug-in hardware does add weight. At 4,850 pounds, the S E PERFORMANCE is substantially heavier than the gasoline GT 63, and cargo capacity drops to 7.2 cubic feet. AMG’s solution is to use electrification aggressively enough that the additional mass buys an entirely new level of performance. The 2.7-second run to 60 mph is accompanied by an electronically limited 199-mph top track speed.
